Leica Akademie Workshop Update

Hi all - and thank you to the staff at Leica Store Bellevue and Leica Akademie USA for helping support a now sold-out landscape photography workshop event this coming January 11-13, 2019. The event will combine instruction indoors and outdoors for 12 participants, including a day shooting in the field at Deception Pass State Park (Washington), about 90 minutes north of the Seattle area. Leica Akademie instructor Nathan Kellum from Leica Store Bellevue and I will be leading the event.

Events like this are really cool opportunities to meet folks, gain new ideas, progress one's skills and overall have a neat-o and memorable time with other photographers of similar interests. If you ever get the opportunity to attend an event such as this, I highly recommend it :). Check out the other events scheduled and hosted in conjunction with accomplished photographer-instructors at Leica Akademie USA https://leicaakademieusa.com. and at Leica Store Bellevue .

In my mind, the offseason (e.g. winter) brings the best and most interesting outdoor shooting subjects and conditions, full of introspection, drama, and beauty. Conditions are often unpredictable and sometimes frustrating, much like life itself. Within these circumstances however come the outdoor moments of greatest reward.

Photos of the Leica Store Exhibit

Here's what the actual exhibit looks like at the Leica Store Bellevue (WA)... nine frames total, 8 are 24" x 36" and the one on the back right wall is 36" x 48". The show is up through the first week in January, 2019. Not a true gallery space but it works pretty well especially given that it is actually a retail space.

The Leica Store staff hosts a number of shows & artists throughout the year, mixing it up between photo genres, color, and black & white. They also offer workshop instruction throughout the year. I'll be helping out with one such workshop in January as part of the Leica Akademie USA series of classes. 3 days & 12 attendees, a combination of classroom instruction and field shooting.

Opening Reception at the Leica Store Bellevue Nov 11, 2018

Leica Store Bellevue hosted a full house at their location at the Bellevue Mall - in case you hadn’t caught up with the last post, this was for their hosting of my exhibit of the Solitude: Snow & Ice (2017) project. The frames all came together a week in advance of deadline (total bonus) and they were gorgeous. 8 at 24” x 36” and a centerpiece at 38” x 50.” Here a a few shots from the event, the first being general manager Brandon Andre giving his intro. Photos were shot by friends Marlowe Fenne and Ashwin Rao. As for me, I spoke to the details of the show from its beginnings in late 2016 to now, and the emotional odyssey that most of my projects are. The exhibit will be up through the first week in January, 2019.

The exhibit will also be supported by a Leica Akademie USA series event, featuring instruction and discussion on both digital processing and shooting in the field. The event will be held during the weekend of January 11-13, and is open to 12 participants. Presentations and digital processing sessions will be during Friday Jan 11 and Sunday Jan 13 in Bellevue. Saturday Jan 12 will be spent shooting in the field at beautiful Deception Pass State Park, about 90 min. north of the Seattle area. The event is organized by Leica Store Bellevue and will be led by myself and by capable and talented Leica Akademie instructor Nathan Kellum. Event & registration info is available on the Leica Akademie USA site.

While the landscape artwork that I produce is on the surface a solo and independent affair, in truth it is supported and in many ways made possible by a small cast of very important friends and colleagues. I am delighted to be able to pursue photography and the creation of artwork the way I done over the years, and am deeply grateful for the input of these close friends & colleagues as well as for the support of the wider community.

If you’d like to know more in-depth about my approach toward this overall photography endeavor and its contributions to my life, check out the Concept page on this site.
